As you may know, we've co-slept with Sage since my back surgery when she was 6 months old. At first it was for convenience so Dustin could sleep through the night while Sage was still nursing at night and I was unable to lift her on my own. As she slowly weaned, we realized we loved snuggling up with her a night and the bonding that co-sleeping brought our family. As she has grown and as I get bigger with Baby Solomon on the way with a very large abdominal incision eminent, we knew it was time to encourage her to make the move to her own bed and bedroom. We wanted to make the transition very positive and be sure she was comfortable there before we brought Solomon home.
We started with a full size mattress on the floor and she LOVES it! We have since added a bed frame that is still close to the ground along with a partial side rail and a step stool so she can easily climb in and out. She's never been a fan of the crib, but really likes being able to get in and out as she pleases and we have lots of security knowing she can come get us if she needs us.
So far she's napping in it beautifully and sleeps most of the night there. If she wakes up in the middle of the night, she simply climbs down and comes and gets us, usually with a big smile on her face. As she gets more and more comfortable and begins sleeping through the night again, she'll be completely in her bed all night!
We are SO proud of her and amazed at how smoothly this transition has been for her. Dustin and I are the ones that miss snuggling her to sleep every night!
